*go to the micro soft office button.  Click on "excel options" button at the bottom.  Click on "formulas" on the left side of the screen.  In the Working with Formulas section there is a box that is labeled "R1C1 reference style".  Un-check the box to get the alpha column and numeric row system.  If the box is checked then the columns and rows are both numeric - which makes for some very confusing formulas.
