How to Run Windows Updates

  • Open Internet Explorer (it won't work properly in Mozilla Firefox)
  • Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  • Click "Scan for Updates"
  • After the updates have been found, click "Review and Install." You may choose to install only critical updates/service packs
  • When asked to install, click "install now." You may be asked to restart your computer after the installations are complete

Configuring Automatic Updates

Windows 2000

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Double-click on "Automatic Updates" which will allow you to set up the automatic updating options.
  • Select the "Automatically download the updates" setting and set it to a day and time to update at least once a week when your computer will be on and connected to the internet.
  • Your computer may reboot after the updates have completed.

Windows XP

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Double-click on "System" to open the system properties
  • Click on the automatic updates tab as seen below
  • Select the "Automatically download the updates" setting and set it to a day and time to update at least once a week when your computer will and on and connected to the internet
  • Your computer may reboot after the updates have completed

Windows Vista

  • Click on Start-> all programs ->Windows Update
  • Click on "Check for Updates".
  • Install the updates it finds, it may say there are no important updates.
  • You may need to restart your computer after installing these updates.

Windows 7

  • Click on Start
  • In the "Search" bar type "Windows Update"
  • Click on the option that says Windows Update
  • When Windows Update pops up click the box that says "Check for updates"
  • If there are updates available, click "Install Updates"
  • Your computer may need to restart after installing updates.
