AntiVirus Programs are programs that users install on their computers to fight the ever growing threat of viruses. These programs come with firewalls and virus scanners that attempt to keep a virus from installing on your computer. AntiVirus Programs often require you to update components so that they can stay updated to fight against viruses more efficiently. Below are some of the highest rated antivirus programs, you can download these programs by clicking on their names.

Free for Windows PC:

1. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) Recommended

MSE is a free antivirus program that is provided by Microsoft. As long as the computer it is being installed on is a legitamate version of a Windows operating system. This program is designed for Windows operating systems and therefore is very efficient at removing, and protecting from viruses. ASU students can bring in their computers to Computing Services and have a ResNet Technician install it for free. If you are currently running Windows 8, MSE is already built into Windows Defender.

2. Avast! Anti Virus Free (AAV)

Avast! is another free antivirus program that is available to the public. It features user-friendly features such as "silent gaming mode" where the computer doesn't announce when it has updated. Caution: Avast! has multiple versions of their antivirus program, some you have to pay for. Be sure to download the "home" or "free" version.

3. AVG AntiVirus Free (AVG)

AVG is a free antivirus that detects and stops viruses, threats and malware, and keeps your PC running more smoothly. Caution: AVG has multiple versions of their antivirus program, some you have to pay for. Be sure to download the "free" version.

4. Malwarebytes (MBAM)

Malwarebytes is an anti-malware scanner that detects and removes worms, Trojans, rootkits, rogues, spyware, and other dangerous malware from your computer though it is not a full antivirus replacement, it is a good program to use alongside any antivirus program to help keep you protected.

Free for Mac:

1. Sophos AntiVirus for Mac/ Sophos Home

Sophos stops all threats—even those designed for Windows—so your computer is safe, and files you send to other computers are safe too. They keep their antivirus light and easy. It'll work quietly in the background with your choice of scanning on-access, on-demand or on a schedule.

2. Avast Free Mac security

Mac OS X is considered one of the most secure operating systems available. But today’s threats aren’t after your computer – they’re after your identity and your money.If you’re on a Mac running OSX, it will work. You need 128 MB of RAM and 750MB of disk space. Beyond that, you can be running just about any stable version of OSX (even Yosemite), and we’ll keep you protected.

3. AdwareMedic/ Malwarebytes for Mac

AdwareMedic is a easy to use too that removes any known adware from Mac computers. Recently combining with Malwarebytes, it now looks for known malware as well without leaving a large footprint. Though it is not a full antivirus, it is a good second-opinion software that can help find things that your current antivirus may not.
