Student Email Setup on Mobile Phones

Setting up your email on a smartphone can be a tricky task. Each phone has different ways of saying the same thing. All you need to know are the settings below.
Note: You must make sure that IMAP settings are enabled on your gmail account.
- Account Name: your full email address (firstname.lastname@example.org)
- Email Address: your full email address (email@example.com)
- Password: your email password
- Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server
- IMAP Server: imap.gmail.com
- Security Type: SSL
- Port: 993
- Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
- SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
- Use Authentication: Yes
- Security Type: TLS
- Port: 465 or 587
Student email is set up through Google and therefore we have to configure mobile devices for student email using gmail settings. We found instructions for setting up specific devices on a google help page so we decided to put them below. These set up instructions are taken directly from http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=75726.
- On your phone, press < Home >, then open the Email application.
- On the 'Your accounts' page, select Next to get started with setup.
- Enter your full Gmail address and password, then select Next.
- On the next screen, you can give the account a nickname and choose the name to display on your outgoing messages. Tap Done.
- You can verify your settings from the Inbox view by tapping < Menu > > Account settings.
Incoming settings, IMAP server: imap.gmail.com, Port: 993, Security type: SSL (always)
Outgoing settings, SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com, Port: 465, Security type: SSL (always)
- Make sure you've enabled IMAP in your main Gmail settings
- Open the Settings app on your device
- Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Tap Add Account...
- Tap Gmail
- Enter your account information, being sure to use your full Gmail address, including '@gmail.com'
- Tap Next
- Tap Save
- You can add additional Gmail accounts by repeating the same steps above.
- On your BlackBerry device, navigate to your home screen
- Select the icon that lets you set up email (this can be called Setup, Setup Wizard, Email Setup, BlackBerry Set-up, E-mail settings, or Personal Email Set-up)
- Follow the setup instructions provided on your device
- If setup is successful, you should receive a confirmation message and a new mailbox icon should appear on your device's home screen, labeled with your Gmail address.
- First-time setup
- If this is your first time setting up Email, simply open your phone's Email app
- Enter your full Gmail address and password
- Tap Sign In
- Additional account setup
- On your phone, open the Email app
- In the top left corner, open the menu by tapping Email
- Tap Preferences & Accounts
- Scroll down and tap the Add An Account button
- Enter your full Gmail address and password
- Tap the Sign In button
- Select 'Messaging' > 'Options' > 'Settings' > 'E-mail' > 'Mailboxes.'
- If you have never set up email on your phone before, select 'Yes' to define a new mailbox. If you already have other mailboxes, *select 'Options' and then 'New mailbox.'
- Select 'Start' to begin the setup wizard.
- Select 'IMAP4' and then 'Next.'
- Enter your full email address (including '@gmail.com') as the email address and select 'Next.' Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'
- Enter 'imap.gmail.com' as the incoming mail server and select 'Next.'
- Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' as the outgoing mail server and select 'Next.'
- Select the appropriate access point and then 'Next.'
- Enter a descriptive name for the email account mailbox name.
- Once your mailbox is set up, select it from the email mailbox settings screen.
- Select 'Connection settings' > 'Incoming e-mail.'
- Enter your address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') and password.
- Select 'SSL/TLS' for your security (ports) and define your port as '993.'
- Select 'Back.'
- Select 'Outgoing e-mail.'
- Enter your email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') and password.
- Select 'StartTLS' for your security (ports) and define your port as '587.'
- Select 'Back' and change any other settings according to your preferences.
- Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.
Note: According to gmail's help page BlackBerry, Palm webOS, and Symbian are not supported beyond configuration instructions.
